What Makes Exotic Snakes So Unique?

Snake Jaw

Unlike most other animals, the snake’s jaws are missing a chin bone. Instead, their jaws work in 4 separate, moveable quadrants that are all attached with ligaments. This allows snakes to swallow pretty that is often much larger than their bodies.

Snake Skin

Snakes also have characteristically interesting skin that is made up of scales. These scales can be rough or smooth and usually have a dry texture. As snakes grow and mature over their lifetimes, they must shed their outer skin layers. Snake molting is something that will happen throughout your pet’s life, but the frequency depends largely on size, breed, age, and reproductive state.

Sense of Smell

Snakes are able to track and detect nearby prey by using their keen sense of smell. With the use of their special forked tongue, snakes can collect airborne particles that help to provide a directional sense of taste and smell. If you spot a snake with their tongue moving constantly, they are most likely attempting to track predators or prey.

How to Choose a Pet Snake

If you are committed to doing your research on your breed of snakes for sale, providing a comfortable habitat, and willing to give them space when they need it—you may be ready to adopt a snake.

Some other factors to consider when choosing an exotic snake include:

  • Some snake breeds can grow very large as they mature. So, even if you purchased a manageable adolescent snake, you may need to upgrade their home habitat several times over the years.
  • Certain snake breeds can live well into their 30s and 40s when kept safe in captivity. That’s why it’s essential to do plenty of research before you buy to make sure you’re ready for the time commitment needed for each breed.
  • Captive-bred snakes are the recommended option for those looking to add this exotic animal to their household. While it may be tempting to pick up a wild snake, chances are that the animal will carry parasites or disease, be more susceptible to illness, and be much more difficult to handle.
